Today's subject is a sore one and very controversial to talk about in terms of art.  I wouldn't be me if I didn't take a stab at it and add my ten cents worth into the mix.  Just today I ran across a sketch with a person smoking a cigarette.  I replied the same way I reply to all such works with smoking in it.  Smoking is neither glamorous nor artistic.  That is my simple and brief opinion on the subject.  I mean what is glamorous about people who smoke? I see these models puffing away while taking a so called glamor shot.  Does the smoking make her prettier (except for a horny smoker)?! For the love of God, smoking kills 5 million persons a year and 1,300 persons die daily from it.  That is your glamorous fact! We, as artists, should be doing our part to prevent anybody else from starting up this nasty habit, and certainly not advertise it by adding it to our artwork.  1,300 people a day, doesn't that just shock you a little bit into wanting to stop the glamorization of smoking in art?
Like all the other persons I've given this message to, I expect this artist to send me back his diatribe about how he can do what he wants and that I can take my opinion and stick it where the sun don't shine.  I don't mind, and don't even take it personal.  I bet it might just get him to think, however, and that is worth it to me.  I can't make any of you join me in this crusade, especially you smokers, but give it a whirl if you see smoking in a work of art.  Just send the artist a nice message that it isn't artistic or glamorous.  It can't hurt...
